I have to get this review up quick. Why? Because I was recently watching MTV and they were playing Young the Giant in a commercial to one of their shows, which means it’s only a matter of time before this band becomes a commercial disaster whose music is used as the theme song to MTV True Life: I’m a Crackhead or Real World: Libya.
Formed in 2004 under the name The Jakes, the Irvine, California based Young the Giant released their self-titled debut album in 2010. There isn’t much to separate this album from most other mediocre pop albums coming out except for two tracks, which is what makes Young the Giant this week’s Singular Focus.
My Body is a party song that starts with a stomping bass guitar before turning messy and disstorted. With a thunderous chorus chanting “My body tells me no/But I won’t quit cuz I want more,” this is a song about giving in to your urges and embracing it.
On the other end of the spectrum is I Got, a catchy love song with some blues influences and a great, emotional hook. Again, with sharp drums and infectious guitar riffs, I Got catches that shyness and hopefulness mixed together when you are into someone who may (or may not) know about it.
